Marie Losier

ORA opens the door of the emblematic oratory chapel of Nemours’ castle to contemporary artists.

Carnaval Cardinale, presents a selection of 5 photographs by Marie Losier produced by the Fondazione Claudia Cardinale, during its 2024 summer residency.

Upon her arrival at the Picardeau , the Fondazione ‘s headquarters, Marie Losier immersed herself with delight in Claudia Cardinale’s wardrobe. She selected several dresses and accessories dating from the 1960s and 1970s, picked through garden tools, kitchen utensils and even her own costumes, to imagine the decor for photoshoots in the maze of Le Picardeau’s gardens.

Cinephile spirit inspired by the presence of the actress, Marie Losier invited the latter to take her place in these scenographies, alongside her relatives and friends, equipped with her 6 x 6 cm film camera. The result is contrasting images where glances meet, bodies of different ages pose together in a rural and glamorous setting that always leaves room for reason, for discrepancy, for a joyful disorder. In the oratory, the large-format images are suspended in a non-fixed lightness, echoing the dresses and other decorative elements that appear here and there, in the space. The eye can glean details of the materials, faces and lights captured by Marie Losier.

Marie Losier is a director and visual artist who has lived and worked in New York for 23 years. Her films and exhibitions, combining drawings, video installations, sculptures and photographs, are regularly presented in museums, galleries, biennials and festivals around the world. She is the author of numerous films that balance circus – like on the edge of creative documentary. At the heart of her work, she delves with mischievousness and delicacy into the meanders of her subjectivity to deliver portraits of personalities, often from the world of art, passed through the prism of her baroque, colorful and musical universe. She has just completed two films: Barking in the Dark, a portrait of the cult avant-garde band, The Residents (Barberousse), and a feature film about the musician and performer Peaches : Peaches Goes Bananas, (Tamara Films and Michigan Films ). She is currently developing her first fiction film, Sugar Bomb (Tamara Films and Kidam ), as well as a portrait of the choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas. Marie Losier is represented by Galerie Anne Barrault in Paris.โ€จ
